Overview

Applying from outside Canada

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is the Express Entry stream designed for people whose skilled work experience was gained abroad. You do not need to have worked or studied in Canada to qualify.

It carries a separate eligibility assessment on top of the Express Entry ranking: a points test covering education, experience, language, age, arranged employment and adaptability. You must clear that threshold before your ranking score even becomes relevant.

It also requires proof of settlement funds, unless you are authorised to work in Canada and have a valid job offer. That requirement catches a lot of otherwise strong candidates off guard.

Who this suits

Designed for skilled people applying from outside Canada. You do not need Canadian work history, but you do need to clear a separate points threshold first.

01

Professionals applying from overseas

The primary audience, skilled workers with qualifying foreign experience and no Canadian work history.

02

Candidates with strong credentials

Higher education and strong language results carry real weight both in eligibility and in ranking.

03

Applicants with a Canadian job offer

Arranged employment can improve both the points assessment and the settlement funds position.

04

Candidates with family in Canada

Adaptability factors may apply where a close relative is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

Our process

How we run the file

1

Threshold assessment

First we establish whether you clear the eligibility points test at all. There is no value in building a profile that fails at the threshold.

2

Credential assessment

Foreign education generally needs an Educational Credential Assessment from a designated organisation. We advise which body suits your credential and manage the timeline.

3

Evidence and funds

Foreign employment records, language results and proof of settlement funds are assembled and checked well before an invitation.

4

Profile, invitation, submission

Once the evidence exists, the profile is created and monitored, and the post-invitation application is filed inside the window.

Requirements

What is assessed

The eligibility threshold, settlement fund amounts and qualifying occupations are set by IRCC and updated periodically. We verify the current position for your family size and circumstances.

Our approach

Where foreign-experience files need care

Every file is handled personally by Jagdeep Kailey, RCIC #R535381. Here is where that makes a measurable difference on this route.

Foreign employment evidence

Overseas employment records rarely arrive in the form an officer expects. We work with what you can actually obtain and structure it so the experience is verifiable.

Credential assessment strategy

Choosing the right designated organisation and preparing the submission properly avoids months of delay and a weaker result.

Settlement funds documented correctly

Funds must be available, unencumbered and properly evidenced. Common errors include borrowed money and accounts that cannot be traced.

Admissibility for the whole family

Medical and criminal admissibility applies to accompanying dependants too. We assess the family as a unit from the start.

Avoidable errors

Frequent problems

These are the problems we see most often in files that arrive after something has already gone wrong. Almost every one is preventable at the preparation stage.

Questions

Frequently asked

Hover or tap any question to open it.

No. A job offer is not required, though arranged employment can help both your eligibility points and your ranking score.

The required amount depends on family size and is updated periodically by IRCC. More important than the figure is how the funds are evidenced, they must be genuinely available to you and traceable.

For immigration purposes an Educational Credential Assessment establishes the Canadian equivalent of your qualification. That is separate from professional licensing, which is handled by provincial regulators in each field.

Yes. Accompanying dependants are included in the application, which raises the settlement funds requirement and means each must also be admissible.

That can help or complicate matters depending on how the experience is structured. We assess which occupation gives the strongest and most defensible claim.
